I wanted to make a scarf that looked like an old wall, with graffiti, old signage and natural decay showing through. But I wanted the markings to be subtle and worn. Most of the textiles paints I’ve tried are fairly opaque – and sit on the surface. I tried to create paints out of some of the natural colorants I was using. Im still stuck on the binder but am working on it.
This scarf was dyed using madder, brazil wood, coffee, mustard, rust, and indigo. Then it was silkscreened with a hand concocted indigo “ink” and drawn on with chalk. The techniques that I used have been used for hundreds of years to fix pigment to cloth.
